In a recent blog post, we highlighted the story of several Texas workers who were killed at work. In that case, the workers were trapped after a fire broke out. Rescue workers were not able to remove the workers quick enough and, sadly, they died. This story may leave some wondering — what are some common workplace hazards that can lead to fatalities?

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, several different types of hazards are frequently cited workplace safety regulation violations. These violations can easily lead to worker injury and death. In fact, more than 4,400 workers in the United States were killed in 2013. Latino workers — like those in the recent case — are particularly at risk.

OSHA says that common workplace hazards include falls. Many businesses fail to use the proper fall protection to protect employees. Additionally, the use of scaffolding is also a common source of violations and injuries. Ladders can also lead to workplace injuries from improper use.

Problems with electrical systems is another common source of workplace accidents. This includes problems with the electrical wiring and the system as a whole.

Other hazards and violations include unguarded machines and machinery, issues with powered trucks and industrial vehicles and lack of respiratory protections.

The families of Texas workers who have been killed in a fatal workplace accident should be sure to explore their legal rights. While this blog post cannot provide legal advice, an attorney can help to explain if a family is entitled to compensation in a wrongful death suit. In some cases, a wrongful death suit can help to compensate families for what they have lost.
