When thinking about trucks, many people may think about them speeding down a Texas highway. However, trucks are often involved in much more complicated maneuvers than this. Like other cars and motor vehicles, trucks often need to be able to safely move in all directions. This includes backing up.

Traveling in reverse is often dangerous for drivers. According to data from the National Safety Council, 15,000 injuries are caused each year by drivers who are backing up. Additionally, 500 deaths per year are caused by drivers who are traveling in reverse. In other words, about one in four traffic accidents are caused by a driver that is backing up. Truck drivers, and other motor vehicle operators, need to understand the dangers of backing up. They also need to take precautions in order to avoid accidents while in reverse.

One way to avoid accidents while in reverse is to understand the vehicles’ blind spots. A medium size truck has a blind spot of approximately 160 feet behind the vehicle and 16 feet in front of the vehicle. Drivers need to remember that this large blind spot can cause serious issues when backing up. Another cause for concern are low clearances as the truck backs up. Drivers should check for low clearances such as low hanging wires or trees before backing up.

By doing a walk around of the truck before backing up, truck drivers can check for hazards and other issues that may cause an accident. Truck drivers also need to be aware that the situation can change frequently around the truck. Therefore, these checks need to be done every time someone tries to back up — even from an area that they are familiar with.

Additionally, a spotter should be used in order to give hand or verbal signals in order to help the truck avoid obstacles as it moves in reverse. If it is not possible for a driver to use a spotter, using a backup alarm can help to avoid accidents.

Not every Texas driver will take the necessary precautions when backing up. When an accident occurs, those injured need to ensure that all precautions were taken. If a negligent truck driver is responsible for a truck accident, an attorney may be necessary. Truck accident victims may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
