High levels of arsenic were found in some brands of organic baby formula by researchers at Dartmouth College.

Researchers found that many products, such as organic baby formula, cereal bars, and energy shot drinks, that contain brown rice syrup have arsenic levels higher than the EPA allows in drinking water. Currently, there are no laws limiting the amount of arsenic levels in food products.

Brown rice syrup is a sweetener used as an alternative to high fructose corn syrup. Inorganic arsenic, the kind found in food made with brown rice syrup, is a known carcinogen that can cause cancer and heart disease. Infants exposed to arsenic may suffer from poorer intellectual functions and lower IQs.

A deadly fire that started in a home in Fredericksburg left two teenagers dead and their father severely burned.

The fire, which started last Tuesday morning, is believed to have been sparked by a faulty water heater. The mother, father, and two siblings were able to escape.

The father tried to go back inside to save his two other children, age 13 and 15, but sustained serious burns to nearly 40 percent of his body. He is currently in critical condition at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where he is expected to stay for the next three weeks.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the young victims who died in this terrible fire.

A major car accident in Florida that occurred over the weekend sent 18 motorists to the hospital and claimed the lives of 10 people.

Florida Highway Patrol shut down part of Interstate 75 due to dense fog and smoke coming from nearby brush fires that significantly lowered visibility. About 15 minutes after reopening the stretch of highway, at least a dozen cars, six tractor-trailers, and a motor home collided with one another.

Several of the cars burst into flames after colliding with the tractor-trailers, others were wedged under the large trucks. Emergency responders could hardly see, guided only by the screams of the victims.

Our condolences are with the family and friends of those affected by the crash.

At least 16 people, including two Americans, are still missing after a luxury cruise liner capsized near the Italian coast on Friday night.

About 4,200 were on board the ship when the captain traveled too close to shore and hit the rocky ocean floor. Evacuation efforts were delayed after crew members assured passengers it was only an electrical malfunction. However, Italians on board phoned for police and sent out rescue alerts.

Many of the lifeboats available were unreachable, as part of the ship was submerged into the Mediterranean Sea. Those unable to make it onto a lifeboat jumped into the sea and swam to shore or waited for several hours to be rescued. At least 60 people were injured and six have been declared dead.

The ship’s captain has been arrested for the causing the wreck and is facing charges of manslaughter and abandoning the ship before everyone on board was evacuated.

The 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans and the 2001-2002 Ford Escape SUVs are the products of the recall. Failure in the minivans’ torque converter output shafts could cause a sudden loss of power. Two minor accidents have occurred as a result, one person suffered minor injuries.

The SUVs may have brake-fluid leaks that could lead to corrosion that could spark a fire. According to a Ford spokesperson, minor property damage and vehicle damage have resulted due to a fire, but no injuries have been reported.

Last week a San Diego Superior County jury awarded a man $7.5 million in his lawsuit against Starbucks Coffee Co.

In 2008, the man was at a Starbucks when he slipped and fell on the floor the store manager was mopping. He hit his head and suffered injuries that have prevented him from returning to work as a chiropractor since the fall.

The jury found Starbucks Coffee Co. guilty of neglecting to maintain its property and has ordered the company to pay $7.5 million for the man’s medical expenses, lost income, and loss of enjoyment of life. $1 million will go to his wife for loss of consortium.

Three retired football players filed a complaint in federal court against the National Football League early last week.

The three former players, as well as their wives, are suing the NFL for brain injuries they suffered while playing professionally and want to create a medical monitoring program to help detect brain injuries. They say that the NFL should have known, or did know, that repeated blows to the head would lead to serious and permanent brain damage.

This lawsuit is one of more than half a dozen that have been filed by former NFL players against the league over the injuries they suffered after enduring repeated concussions and head impacts.

Earlier this year a 19 year-old from Missouri caused a multi-car pileup after receiving or sending nearly a dozen text messages in just as many minutes, killing himself and another person. Accidents like these has caused the National Safety Transportation Board to propose a nationwide ban on cellphone use while driving.

The ban would not just prohibit texting, but talking and emailing as well. Hands-free devices would also not be exempt. Only devices such as GPS systems and similar driving-aid devices would be the exception.

The NTSB claims that 3,092 people were killed last year by distracted drivers. A study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that drivers trying to reach or using a electronic device are 6.7 times more likely to cause or almost cause an accident.
