What are punitive and compensatory damages?

In the event of an accident, there are multiple types of damage that can occur. Compensatory damages are determined by the amount of losses the victim experiences. They may be based on lost wages, medical expenses, and property damage. Punitive damages are assigned by a jury or judge in order to pay the victim for any extensive suffering that was not covered by the compensatory damages. This type of award is generally designated for particularly devastating injuries or suffering.
